why renovate?

We have had a remarkable ride in Calgary real estate in the last ten years and now we're suffering the doldrums as new home starts have ebbed to record lows. What does this mean? For those who don't own a home now is the time to buy. Trades are plentiful and builders are hungry. Chances are you can get a pretty good deal and get your home built quickly — not the 14 months that it was taking during the boom.

But if you've got a home to sell first then you've got a problem, because nobody is buying. On the other hand, there are probably a lot of advantages to staying put and improving what you have. New homes suffer from a number of shortcomings, including a lack of landscaping, no services, construction dirt and noise, no trees, and your neighbours don't live there. If you like where you're living, but your home simply doesn't suit your lifestyle then renovation is a cost effective solution that enables you to have the best of both worlds.

Additionally, renovation is also a good financial decision. In many mature neighbourhoods, the market recognizes the value of mature landscaping and established services. The value of properly renovated homes is substantially higher than the average, and by making an investment in your current home you can not only create the space that you want, but you can also add substantially to you assets.
